Family Fun at Connect - Neils Blog - Part 2

Hello again,

I guess if you are reading this then my first attempt at a blog was not too bad after all so let me fill you in on the last few weeks.

I finished my last blog post with an amazing PB (Personal Best) and having smashed ‘heavy week’ which always leaves people with huge smiles on their faces.

After ‘heavy week’ comes … ‘light week’. This format of programming at Connect by the excellent coaches is done so it allows your body to recover and train in sensible cycles. Now light week may sound like a nice easy week, gentle workouts with no weight on the bar etc but how wrong you are!

Light weeks involve new skill challenges and a massive emphasis on technique during the focus sessions where we don’t often lift over 50% of our 1 rep maxes. This allows us to really dial in the movement without worrying about the weights. The WODs (workout of the day) during light week are just as demanding with new skills thrown in but maybe a little more cardio focussed (which we all love, obviously!). These light weeks are superb for trying out new skills or “training your weakness”.

Unfortunately Sarah missed out on light week as she was unable to train. I can hear you all crying out ...WHY?

Well, she had just made it through heavy week with a massive haul of 5 PB's but on the Sunday she managed to put her back out due to a rather strong … sneeze! It took a visit to Connects resident sports therapist, Paul Keenan, to put it right and get her back training and I can tell you first hand she is a nightmare when she doesn't train! After the light week came ‘medium week’ and Sarah got back on it. Phew!

I mentioned in the previous post that the coaches always give three different levels of scaling, allowing everyone to participate at their own level and I have to admit that I am guilty of playing it safe on a number of occasions and scaling it where I probably didn't need to. I decided that that needed to change. I needed to push myself. So during these last few weeks I have been trying to do as many RX'd WODs as I possibly could. Although these were tough, the feeling after was amazing knowing the hard work is paying off. RX by the way means performing the workout as the coach designed and not having to scale weight or movement at all.

As it was the Easter holidays my daughter Madi was able to train more than she would normally and the progress she is making is amazing. She is no longer using a training bar (lighter than a normal bar) for some lifts and as always shows me up in the WOD's. She even has her own nickname now Mad Dog!  Thanks Barney!

On Easter Sunday there was a special class. It was open to everyone with no class size limits and really made use of Connects 5500sq ft facility. It was 2 x WODs: the 1st was a partner WOD and the 2nd was a team one. I won't go into details about them but if anyone knows what a burpee is I will say there were 200 of them in the 2nd WOD. All those who don't know go and Google it!

Over 30 people turned up and it was fantastic. I may not have said that straight afterwards as I was feeling a little unwell! It was just another example of the variety of classes you get at Connect.

Another aspect of Connect is the personal training they offer and I was lucky enough to win a session with Connect owner David Draper. PT sessions can be tailored to individual needs and I wanted to work on technique in the Olympic lifts. It was great. There is so much to learn with each lift it was like being back at school, but I would highly recommend it.

I shall leave you this time with a quote from one of the members who is unable to train at Connect at the moment due to working in Ecuador. I think this sums up what Connect is all about:

“Connect is a special place … I thought I loved CrossFit but CrossFit only works when you feel happy, confident and strong in the place you train. I miss Connect a lot. Do you lot have any idea how lucky you are?!"

Welcome to The Box!

What can we say about this video.....but WOW! We are totally blown away by the amazing job our friend and member Craig Sawyer at Bluejuice video (www.bluejuice.co.uk) has done for us on our new Connect short film.

We made one ourselves 3 years ago when we first opened (you can still see this on our YouTube channel for a bit of  a trip down memory lane!) but towards the back end of last year and the move into our big, new facility we realised it could do with a little updating.

Craig stepped up to the plate and shot the footage over three or four days and then crafted what we think is one hell of a good promo video. It really captures what we do at Connect and shows all of our classes and range and abilities of our members so well.

Connect is for everyone of any age and any ability.

If you live in East Sussex and would like more information on how you can get involved with us then head on over to our website: www.crossfitconnect.co.uk or give us a call on 01273-410899.

Now put your feet up, grab the paleo popcorn and enjoy.

Family Fun at Connect - Neils Blog Part 1

Welcome to my first ever blog, please be gentle!
I’d like to first give you a brief Farley family history.

For a number of years I’ve been a gym member but to say I went on a regular basis might be stretching the truth somewhat. My in-laws had been going to this thing called ‘CrossFit’ and it was all they talked about. In a moment of weakness I agreed to try a taster session and I’ve been hooked ever since. 20kg lighter, fitter than I’ve ever been and I have found my abs (I never thought I had any but apparently they were in there all the time!)

Not much needs to be said about this..... :)

For 8 months my wife Sarah was a CrossFit widow. She moaned about the amount of time I spent there and the fact that every conversation at family gatherings was about WODs (Workout of the Day), PBs (Personal Bests), who lifted what and when and comparing ripped hands!

However… after persuading her to try it out she has now been a member for almost six months and only moans when she can’t get to train four times a week! She also sits and religiously fills in her training diary every session (something the coaches are very hot on to track progress) which when I got mine was a ‘waste of money’ and ‘why do you need that?!’

My 12 year old daughter Madi decided that the school cricket team , athletics team and trampolining wasn’t enough so joined CrossFit kids.  She has also recently starting joining us in the adult WOD classes as she is making such good progress.  With the exceptional coaching she is receiving there might be some exciting time ahead. 2020 CrossFit Games here we come!

Youngest and oldest! Madi with Phil C - a 54 year age gap!

My son Leo is only four so it’s frowned upon to leave him at home while we train, so he comes too. That’s the good thing about Connect; everyone is welcome and made to feel part of the family. He has already told me that when he is bigger he wants to lift heavy stuff so it’s only going to be a matter of time before I have another member of the family beating my WOD times.

Well now on to the present and we have just finished HEAVY week by coach Olly and boy did it live up to its name. An awesome week that gave everybody a chance to hit some new PBs. The programming at Connect is done sensibly on a rolling basis that includes light, medium and heavy weeks. This gives us a chance to work on the different aspects of CrossFit such as pure strength, tech work, skills and cardio and allows us a chance to recover from the demands of training.

Sarah took full advantage last week and managed five new PBs in total and achieved her first RX’d WOD. RX’d means performing the workout at the top level rather than scaling to lighter weights or different movements according to personal needs/abilities. The coaches at Connect provide three different levels of scaling each day to allow everyone to participate safely and progress at their own rate. This is not bad for someone who a year ago would have had to be dragged into the box kicking and screaming! She wasn’t the only one though. PBs were dropping like flies. There is nothing like getting a new PB and when you can share it with others it makes the experience even better.

I feel I’m very lucky to be training at the best place with the best coaches you can ask for PLUS I get to do it with the people closest to me. Joining Connect was one of the best things I’ve done and over the next few months I shall be sharing our progress and goals.

When you join Connect you’re not just a member of a gym you’re a member of the family and I’m proud for my family to be part of it.
